Can I keep movement with Botox?

Short answer

Yes. How much movement you keep is a dosing decision, not a fixed property of the treatment. Lower doses soften a line while leaving visible expression. Tell your injector how much movement you want and it should shape the entire plan.

Sally's take

This is my favourite question to be asked, because it means you've thought about what you actually want instead of asking for a treatment by name.

I'll ask you to make your biggest expression, then tell me what you'd be happy keeping. Some people want to raise their brows fully. Others only care about the line between them and are perfectly happy for the forehead to go quiet. Those are different plans and, honestly, different prices.

There's a trade-off and I'd rather say it plainly. The more movement you keep, the more your lines still show when you move. You get to pick where you sit on that scale. My job is making sure you pick it on purpose instead of finding out afterwards.

How movement is controlled

  • Dose. Less product produces partial softening rather than full relaxation.
  • Number of injection points. Fewer points spread across a muscle can soften it without switching it off.
  • Which muscles are included. Leaving part of the forehead untreated preserves lift.
  • Placement relative to the brow. Small differences here decide whether brows stay put.

The trade-off, honestly

Keeping movement means keeping some line when you move. If your goal is for a line to be invisible even at full expression, that needs a heavier dose and you will feel less movement. Neither choice is wrong. What matters is that you picked it.

It also means the result may not last quite as long before you notice it fading, because you started closer to your baseline.

What to say at your appointment

Plain language works better than treatment names here. Saying you want to still look surprised when you are surprised tells an injector more than any unit count would.

Quick answers

Does keeping movement mean it lasts less time?
Often a little, yes. You started closer to your baseline, so you notice it fading sooner. Many people think that's a fair trade.
Can I keep movement in some areas and not others?
Absolutely, and that's usually the better plan. A common one is softening the elevens more firmly while going gently across the forehead.
How do I describe what I want?
Plain language beats treatment names every time. Saying you want to still look surprised when you're surprised tells me more than any unit count would.

Questions worth asking

  • If I want to keep most of my movement, what dose would you suggest?
  • Which areas can we leave alone entirely?
  • Will my lines still show when I make an expression, and how much?
  • How does keeping movement change how long this lasts?
