event timing

How far before a wedding or event should I get filler?

Short answer

Allow at least four to six weeks. Filler needs about four weeks to fully settle, and bruising and swelling need time to resolve. For lips, or for a first treatment, plan three months out and treat well before the date rather than close to it.

Sally's take

Filler needs more runway than tox, and lips need the most of all.

It isn't that something is likely to go wrong. It's that the honest assessment point is four weeks, and if you want a small adjustment after that, you need another four. Six weeks is the bare minimum that leaves you any options.

I'll decline to place lip filler close to a wedding, and I'd be wary of anyone who won't. There's nothing to gain from that timing and it's a genuinely bad week to be swollen.

Recommended timing

  • Cheeks, chin, jawline, experienced: four to six weeks before
  • Lips, experienced: six to eight weeks before
  • Any first-time filler: first appointment about three months out, adjustment no later than six weeks before
  • Too late: under four weeks, and well under that for lips

Why filler needs more time than tox

  • Swelling peaks at 24 to 48 hours and takes one to two weeks to substantially settle
  • The result is not final until about four weeks
  • Bruising is more common with filler, particularly in the lips
  • Any adjustment needs its own four-week settling period

If your event is close

It is usually a better decision to wait until after. A good injector will tell you that. If something genuinely needs addressing, a very conservative approach well outside the swelling window is the only version worth considering, and it should be discussed rather than assumed.

Quick answers

How far ahead for lips specifically?
Six to eight weeks if you can manage it. Lips swell more and more visibly than anywhere else.
Can I do anything closer to the date?
A hydrating treatment may be an option well outside the swelling window, but that's a conversation, not an assumption.
What if I've had filler before?
It helps, because you know how you swell. Four to six weeks is usually workable for non-lip areas.

Questions worth asking

  • Given my date, is there still time to do this safely?
  • If we treat now, when is the last day I could adjust?
  • Would you advise waiting until after the event?
  • What is the realistic chance of visible bruising?
