When does Botox start working?
Short answer
Most people notice the first change within three to five days, and the full effect settles at about two weeks. Judge your result at two weeks, not before. Anything you see on day three is incomplete.
Sally's take
The two-week mark matters far more than people expect, and it's the single most useful thing to know before a first appointment.
If you check the mirror on day four and think it didn't work, you're just looking too early. If you check on day four and panic that it's too much, also too early, because it's still developing. Write the two-week date down somewhere and try to leave it alone until then.
That's also when I want to see you if we haven't worked together before. Two weeks is when we can honestly say whether the dose was right, and add a touch if it wasn't.
The timeline
- Day 1 to 2. Usually nothing yet. Small bumps at the injection sites settle within an hour or so.
- Day 3 to 5. Most people notice movement starting to soften.
- Day 7 to 10. The effect is close to full and lines continue to relax.
- Day 14. Full effect. This is the point to assess the result and adjust if needed.
- Beyond. Static lines, the ones present at rest, may keep softening over subsequent rounds as the skin gets a break from creasing.
Why the two-week follow-up matters
Adding product is easy. Removing it is not possible. A conservative first dose plus a two-week check is the sequence that reliably lands on a result you like, and it is why I would rather start low with a new patient.
Quick answers
- Is it normal for one side to move before the other?
- Yes, it's common in the first week. Faces aren't symmetrical and muscles don't respond in perfect lockstep. Bring it up at two weeks if it's still uneven.
- Can I speed it up?
- Not meaningfully. Some people exercise the treated muscles for the first hour, though the evidence is thin. Mostly it's a waiting game.
- When can I judge my result?
- Fourteen days. Not before.
Questions worth asking
- When exactly should I assess my result?
- Do you offer a two-week follow-up, and is it included?
- What should I do if one side develops differently from the other?
- How far in advance of an event should I treat?
